FLORENCE - So what's in a naming contest? In Florence, so many entries that the contest to name a Frontier League baseball team may be extended through the weekend.
We've gotten hundreds of entries, Gary Enzweiler, founder, president and CEO of Northern Kentucky Professional Baseball said about the contest.
The naming contest was scheduled to end Friday, but the mayor may request it be extended through this weekend's Florence Y'All festival.
This whole thing is about the Greater Kentucky community, Mr. Enzweiler said. We want the community involved.
Mr. Enzweiler wouldn't reveal any of the name suggestions for the team, which will be coached and managed by Chris Sabo, former third baseman for the Cincinnati Reds, but said the winning submission should be chosen in a few weeks.
We're looking for the best name, he said of the team expected to start playing next May and bring $1.9 million to the community annually.
Jimmy Davis, 34 of Burlington, said he'd like to see it named the Florence Knyghts because spelling it that way gets NKY for Northern Kentucky) in the name.
It should be Northern Kentucky Stingrays or Northern Kentucky Sharks, because Northern Kentucky is known for the aquarium in Newport, said Jessica Bridewell, 21 of Bellevue.
Walton Mayor Phillip Trzop didn't have a specific name in mind but had a place to start. It will have to have "Y'all' in there, he said, referencing the Florence Y'all water tower that announces the city to travelers passing by on Interstate 75.
It was announced earlier this month that as long as final negotiations go well, Northern Kentucky Professional Baseball will bring a Frontier League team to Florence witha stadium to be built at the former Fantasy Frontier near I-75 and U.S. 42.
The contest is one more step in the process to show the Frontier League's commitment, said Mayor Diane Whalen.
Entries for the naming contest can be picked up at Sub-Station II in Florence, the Florence Post Office and the city building.
Ms. Whalen said she plans to ask Mr. Enzweiler to extend the contest and provide entries at the Florence Y'all Festival this weekend.
