Trustee for pension fund quits under fire
By The Associated Press
COLUMBUS - The lobbyist for the Ohio Turnpike Commission has resigned as a trustee of the Ohio Police Fire & Pension Fund after an inspector general's report said he did pension fund work on commission time.
Patrick Patton submitted his resignation to the fund's board chairman, Tom Bennett, in a letter dated Monday.
The report said Mr. Patton worked more than 150 days for the fund on the commission's time. He also billed the fund more than $8,000 for mileage expenses he incurred while driving a turnpike commission car to fund meetings, the report said.
In his resignation letter, Mr. Patton wrote, It has always been my intention to serve the fund and its members to the best of my ability. Therefore, I believe it is in the best interest of the board to accept my resignation at the present time.
Mr. Patton wrote that he intended to resolve any issue of proper restitution soon. Calls to Mr. Patton requesting additional comment Tuesday were not answered.
A report released Aug. 6 by state Inspector General Tom Charles found more than 170 instances of employees accepting meals, golf outings, professional sports tickets and luxury seats from contractors doing business with the turnpike commission.
