Heisman hopefuls
Enquirer staff and news services
Statistics last year for this season's top preseason candidates for the Heisman Trophy:
Ken Dorsey, QB, senior, Miami: 184-for-318 for 2,652 yards and 23 TDs. Led Hurricanes to national championship as junior and is 26-1 as a starter. Already holds Miami school record for most career TD passes (58).
Rex Grossman, QB, junior, Florida: 259-for-395 for 3,896 yards and 34 TDs. Steve Spurrier is gone and Grossman will be receiving play calls from former Marshall offensive coordinator Ed Zaunbrecher. Grossman, second in the Heisman balloting last year, led the nation in passing efficiency and total offense last season (354.4 ypg).
Dwone Hicks, RB, senior, Middle Tennessee: 191 attempts for 1,144 yards and 20 TDs. Also had 230 receiving yards. Dark horse of 2002 class. Ranked second last year in individual scoring at 13.5 ppg. Has 2,602 career yards.
Byron Leftwich, QB, Marshall: 315 completions in 470 attempts for 4,132 yards and 38 TDs. Broke four MAC records. Also rushed 64 times for 241 yards and two TDs. Marshall Coach Bob Pruett, a former offensive coordinator at Florida, says Leftwich is the best quarterback he has ever coached.
Dave Ragone, QB, senior, Louisville: 231-for-383 for 3,056 yards and 23 TDs. Also rushed 92 times for 360 yards and three TDs. Coaches say the Toledo product is even stronger and faster this year. School already has made a bobblehead doll of him.
Chris Simms, QB, junior, Texas: 214-for-362 for 2,603 yards and 22 TDs. Bad news is he threw 11 interceptions, but the good news is he no longer has the pressure of a QB derby with Major Applewhite.
