N.Y. fair warned of carnival ride danger
By The Associated Press
COLUMBUS - A crack found in a joint of a ride that broke at the Ohio State Fair has prompted officials to inform New York about it before an identical ride at a county fair in that state is opened again, a spokesman for the Ohio Department of Agriculture said Friday.
A weld broke on the ride Thursday at a place that isn't listed by the manufacturer to be tested, according to the department, which is in charge of amusement ride inspections. Two people suffered minor injuries when the car they were riding in slammed to the ground in a 15-foot drop.
Agriculture spokesman Mark Anthony said that on a different joint of the same ride, inspectors found a small crack under the surface that may cause the joint to break.
The ride at the Erie County Fair in New York was shut down after the Ohio accident, Anthony said.
