Dusing wins U.S. 200 freestyle
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Covington Catholic graduate Nate Dusing was the surprise winner in the men's 200-meter freestyle in 1:47.08, just 0.43 seconds off the American record, Tuesday night at the U.S. National Swimming Championships.
Dusing, a 2000 Olympic silver medalist, sprinted into the lead on the first lap and defeated favorites Michael Phelps and Klete Keller. Dusing's first 50 meters were on world-record pace.
I looked at my competition, and I knew they were all good at the 400, Dusing, 23, said. I know how to use my speed to get ahead, and I was just praying to God I could hold on.
Sycamore graduate Daniel Ketchum was seventh in the 200 finals (1:49.42).
Natalie Coughlin shattered the 100-meter backstroke world record, finishing in 59.58 seconds. Coughlin trimmed more than a half-second off the previous record of 1:00.16 set by China's Chihong He in 1994.
In another final Tuesday, Aaron Peirsol won the men's 100 backstroke in 54.01, beating world record-holder Lenny Krayzelburg. St.Xavier graduate Jayme Cramer was seventh in 55.60.
