Judge Jones is getting the award during the association's 77th Annual Convention in San Francisco.
The bar association's Judicial Council presented the former judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit the award Wednesday for his service on the bench and his work for civil rights while practicing law.
It honors extraordinary commitment and personal contributions to the advancement of civil rights.
In many ways, Judge Jones' career mirrored that of Justice Marshall, who won the landmark school desegregation decision that outlawed segregation in public schools.
Judge Jones succeeded Justice Marshall as general counsel of the NAACP, and the desegregation decision was a guideline for him during his 10 years in that job.
Justice Marshall was the first African-American to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.
Judge Jones, who retired in March, will also be honored later this month when he will receive the Thurgood Marshall Lifetime Achievement Award.
