Five questions with Sam Wyche
By Dustin Dow
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Former Bengals coach Sam Wyche will be in town next weekend for the Fifth-Third/Fox 19 Celebrity Golf Classic hosted by Cris Collinsworth and Johnny Bench. Wyche took time this week to answer five questions from the Enquirer's Dustin Dow.
What are you up to these days?
Oh about 210-211. It fluctuates. Actually I am living part of the time in Florida and part of the time in South Carolina. We've got a couple horses and a hound dog and that is about it. I've got a paralyzed vocal cord. I can't talk very loud, so I don't do NFL broadcasts anymore. I got my certificate to do something that I have always wanted to do, though.
What is that?
Teaching high school. I'm going to be a substitute teacher in the Fall and if I like it, it's something I may want to do full time. It is something I've never had the time or the chance to do and I think I'll really enjoy it. I would like to teach a subject like business or social studies.
How will your voice hold up in the classroom?
That will be the test because the voice gives out after too much talking. So that is why I want to be a substitute first. If it's too hard to talk, I'll just ask questions and ask for long answers.
How is your golf game?
I am an absolutely non-golfer these days. I take pills for my heart and they don't mix well with the sunshine. So my plans for the tournament are not to play, but to go out there and be the most annoying on-course personality. If you miss a putt, you're going to hear about it from me.
(Cris) Collinsworth said he could get you to do whatever he wanted you to do?
Yeah right. Collinsworth was actually going to be my first example when I start teaching. I figure no matter what the subject, I could find some way to use him as a bad example.
