26 Ohioans named Evans Scholars

The Cincinnati Enquirer

The Evans Scholars Foundation has awarded 26 full tuition and housing scholarships to Ohio caddies for the 2002-03 academic year.

The foundation selected scholarship winners at meetings Nov. 29 at Kenwood County Club and Dec. 6 at Sylvania Country Club. The students will live in Evans Scholars Scholarship Houses at Ohio State University and Miami University, two of the program's 14 chapters.

All are caddies who earn scholarships based on four criteria: caddie record, academic record, financial need and character.

There are currently 825 golf caddies attending college as Evans Scholars. More than 7,400 have graduated as Evans Scholars since the program was founded in 1930 by Charles “Chick” Evans Jr., famed Chicago amateur and winner of the 1916 U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur. The Western Golf Association, which celebrated its centennial in 1999, has administered the Chick Evans Scholarship Program since its inception in 1930 through the Evans Scholars Foundation.

Funds for the scholarships come mostly from contributions by more than 100,000 golfers who annually donate more than $5 million to the foundation.

The program is also supported by 23 affiliated golf associations and from proceeds generated by the Advil Western Open conducted by the Western Golf Association.

The 2002 Ohio list with high school, sponsoring club and college in parenthesis:
Anthony C. Anzalone (Hilliard Darby, Muirfield Village Golf Club, Ohio State); Daniel J. Beck (Elder, Western Hills Country Club, OSU); Lauren A. Beery (Springboro, Dayton CC, Miami); Anthony M. Berardinelli (Toledo St. Francis, Sylvania CC, OSU); Wayne J. Bevis (Roger Bacon, Losantiville, MU); Kent E.
