Firecracker injury requires surgery

        A Covington man's right hand was severely damaged late Thursday by an exploding firecracker, according to a nursing supervisor at University Hospital.

        Kendall Evans, 19, was in surgery and listed in fair condition early today.

        The incident occurred near John G. Carlisle Elementary School, a Covington police dispatcher said.

        Further details were not released.
