Lt. Gov. explores race

By Bruce Schreiner

LOUISVILLE — Lt. Gov. Steve Henry became the latest Democrat to form an exploratory committee for governor Tuesday as he started emerging from the shadow of Gov. Paul Patton.

With his wife, former Miss America Heather French Henry, and their young daughter Harper at his side, Mr. Henry said he would emphasize health care, education and issues affecting the elderly and veterans.

“It is time for me to discuss my independent views for the commonwealth of Kentucky,” Mr. Henry told more than 100 cheering supporters in the rotunda of the Jefferson County Courthouse.

Mr. Henry is in his second term as Mr. Patton's lieutenant governor.

Mr. Henry touted the accomplishments of the “Patton-Henry administration,” and said Mr. Patton had “fundamentally changed Kentucky for the better.” Mr. Henry said he would try to build on the progress if elected.

“Today I step out of the shadow of the office of governor,” he said.

Mr. Henry, an orthopedic surgeon, said improving health care would be a top priority if elected governor, but didn't offer any proposals.

Among Democrats, state House Speaker Jody Richards, Louisville businessman Charlie Owen and Attorney General Ben Chandler also have formed exploratory committees.

Republicans who have formed exploratory committees include U.S. Rep. Ernie Fletcher of Lexington, Jefferson County Judge-Executive Rebecca Jackson and state Rep. Steve Nunn of Glasgow. State Sen. Virgil Moore of Leitchfield and educator Bert Minton of Somerset are also in the field.
