WITHAMSVILLE Kim Keyer-Scott competed in her first golf tournament last year at the Greater Cincinnati Women's Amateur Invitational Championship.
A surprised Keyer-Scott reached the semifinals. One year later, she helped Northern Kentucky University finish third at the NCAA Division II Championships. The 34-year-old sophomore now expects success.
Former champion Lynn Thompson is trying to win her third Women's Met championship after earning back-to-back titles in 1980-81. Thompson, 44, spent the last year winning the Division III golf national championship at Thomas More College.
Both Keyer-Scott and Thompson started their run to the Women's Met finals Monday at Royal Oak Country Club as two of 16 golfers advancing to today's championship flight. Thompson's 4-over-par 75 led all scores, while Keyer-Scott shot a 6-over 77, tied for second.
I'mhappy with my score, Thompson said. The course played hard, so I was happy with a 75. Kim had a great round today. We were basically stroke-for-stroke all the way around.
Janie Klare, who won the Women's Met in 1985 and '89, tied with Keyer-Scott at 77.
I expect a lot of myself, Keyer-Scott said. Anyone that's competitive is like that. If you want to be the best at anything you do, you have to be hard on yourself.
Former University of Cincinnati golfer Katie Rakel, who reached the Women's Met finals last year before losing to Melissa Yeazell, shot a 10-over 81 to qualify for the championship flight.
The 16 golfers will compete in match play, beginning today. Tee times start at 8 a.m.
Keyer-Scott's road to the Women's Met started five years ago in Belgium; she moved there because of her husband Robert's job at Procter & Gamble Co.
I liked it, and kept playing, Keyer-Scott said. The better I got, the more I wanted to play.
She and her husband returned to Cincinnati in 2000. Keyer-Scott, who graduated from Oak Hills High School, decided to enroll in college full time. She is majoring in psychology and criminal justice, and also plays on the golf team.
Initially, having a daughter almost their age, I didn't think I would fit in, Keyer-Scott said of being on the NKU squad. But they've actually accepted me. We get along great.
Thompson, 44, has played golf for 27 years. She was a part-time student at Thomas More when she heard the school was starting a golf team. One season later, she won the Division III title.
Both Thompson and Keyer-Scott hope to use their collegiate success en route to the Women's Met title this week.
I think I'm going to have to beat Lynn Thompson to win it, Keyer-Scott said. And she's a great player.
