Fund-raiser searched for alcohol
The Associated Press
DANVILLE, Ky. A party to raise funds for downtown preservation went flat when three police officers showed up looking for alcohol.
Many people headed for the exit well before the Heart of Danville Antique Preview Party was supposed to end Thursday night.
The officers peaked under tables and rummaged through trash cans, but all they found was a frozen daiquiri that an organizer said was non-alcoholic. The concoction was being sent to a laboratory for testing.
Alcohol sales are prohibited in Danville.
Julie Wagner, director of Heart of Danville, said fund-raising was probably hurt because many of those who paid $25 for admission wait until late in the party to purchase antiques.
There were no signs that alcohol was present at the event, said Ms. Wagner and City Manager Steve Biven, who was looking into the controversy.
Event organizers are considering filing a harassment complaint against the city police department, Ms. Wagner said.
She said their event appeared to be singled out by police, noting that other events in town charge and serve alcohol.
About 200 people attended the Heart of Danville event on the Centre College campus. The show is the only fund-raiser held by Heart of Danville. Danville and Boyle County provide funding to the organization.
