Sidewalks link homes with parks

Township completes $85M plan

By Lew Moores
The Cincinnati Enquirer

ANDERSON TOWNSHIP — The sidewalk project along about a half-mile of Eight Mile Road has been completed in one month, connecting Clough Pike south with Northport Drive.

The $85,000 project is part of the township's Anderson Trails, which have completed about 3 miles of sidewalks linking neighborhoods with each other, institutions and township parks.

“Our program has been very well received,” said Trustee Peggy Reis. “They like the idea of linking neighborhoods to facilities such as schools, the library (and) public places so that they can walk safely. And youngsters are excited about having somewhere to ride their bikes.”

The Eight Mile project included building sidewalk from Clough south to Holiday Hills Drive on the west side of the street, then continued on the east side to Northport.

Al Mink, chairman of the township's transportation advisory committee, said they hope to complete the project south from Northport to Beechmont Avenue.

Before that, though, work will begin later this year on Nagel Road, connecting the Anderson Branch Post Office to the north end of the parking lot of Feldy's restaurant on Beechmont Avenue.

Mrs. Reis said that so far most of the Anderson Trails project has occurred north of Beechmont Avenue.

“We're looking at our next priority to be south of Beechmont, somewhere in the vicinity of Ayer Elementary School,” said Mrs. Reis.

Mr. Mink said an engineering study is being conducted on putting in a sidewalk along Forest Road from Veteran's Park, past Ayer, crossing Eight Mile west to Merritt Grove Lane.

“We feel it would be useful to residents who may park at the school and walk around,” Mr. Mink said. “Once we get that finished, you could also walk up Pamela Drive to Beechmont Avenue. We'd like to get that started next spring for next summer.”
