Norman falters; Burns, Estes share Kemper Open lead

POTOMAC, Md. — The Shark strayed into the creek.
Greg Norman, ahead by two strokes after the second round, struggled on almost every hole Saturday in the Kemper Open and lost his lead in the water at the sixth hole. The result was a jumbled leaderboard.
Bob Estes and Bob Burns shot 69s to lead at 10-under 203. Jay Williamson, who led the tournament after three rounds six years ago before nerves got the best of him, shot a 67 to match Bob May (69) at 9 under.
“It was a strange day,” said Norman, who shot a 74 to fall to 7 under. “Nothing really happened. Hopefully, I've got my bad round out of me, and I'll be back in the 60s tomorrow.”
LPGA TOUR: Annika Sorenstam, seeking her fourth LPGA Tour victory of the year, shot a 5-under 67 to take a five-stroke lead after the second round of the Kellogg-Keebler Classic in Aurora, Ill.
Sorenstam, who opened with a 63, bogeyed three holes on the back nine but closed with a birdie to finish at 14-under 130.
She opened a seven-stroke lead halfway through the round but three-putted No. 10 for a bogey and also bogeyed No. 12.
SPGA-NFL CLASSIC: Jay Sigel moved into position for his second straight victory, shooting a 4-under 68 for a share of the second-round lead at Clifton, N.J.
South Africa's John Bland, winless on the Senior PGA Tour since 1996, shot a 69 to match Sigel at 8-under 136.
Seven players are within three shots of the lead, and five of them are at least age 56, including Sigel (58) and Bland (56). Players 55 and older have won six of 15 tournaments this year.
Former Broncos quarterback John Elway shot a 76 to lead six players into the final round of the NFL players — past and present — portion. Five-time champion Al Del Greco missed qualifying by a shot.
NCAA MEN: In a season of extraordinary lows and highs, the Minnesota program — targeted for elimination just two months earlier — won its first national championship.
The Golden Gophers, who received a reprieve when boosters raised enough money to reinstate the program for at least a year, shot a 6-under 278 for a 1,134 total and a four-stroke win over top-ranked Georgia Tech.
Tech's Troy Matteson won the individual title, shooting a 4-under 67 to finish at 8-under 276, one stroke better than Texas Christian's Adam Rubinson. Oklahoma State's Hunter Mahan was third, and third-round leader Graeme McDowell of UAB and Minnesota's Justin Smith tied for fourth at 5-under 279.
Matt Anderson, a walk-on playing his first season of intercollegiate golf as a senior, led Minnesota Saturday with a 66. Smith had a 69, Wilhelm Schauman a 71, David Morgan a 72 — and No. 1 man Simon Nash's 74 wasn't even counted.
BRITISH MASTERS: Phillip Price shot a 4-under 68 for a one-stroke lead after three rounds at Woburn, England. Price three-
putted from 60 feet for a bogey on No. 18, finishing with a three-round total of 15-under 201. Ian Poulter was second, and Justin Rose and Gary Evans were three back along with Soren Hansen.
