Enquirer Page Two power rankings
Enquirer staff
THUMBS UP
1. Sully. Our esteemed colleague Tim Sullivan is off to San Diego, and we're pretty sure it has nothing to do with Pete Rose fans chasing him out of town. Sully upset some, but he always met face-to-face with the athletes and coaches he wrote about. We're gonna miss ya, you Yankee blowhard!!
2. Takeo Spikes. He spoke out about Bengals not attending the voluntary workout. Who knows how much effect those things have, but at least it looks as if someone's trying to turn that ship around.
3. The Reds. Look, who knows how long they can keep this up. But ripping Bob Boone's moves in games that mean something is a lot more fun than when they're 11 1/2 games out.
4. Reds fans. They camped out in the rain and the cold for the right to pay a surcharge to see the final games in the old taxpayer-funded ballpark before it's razed for the new taxpayer-funded ballpark, ignoring the threat of a players' strike that might wipe out those same games.
5. World Cup soccer. It's almost here. The world is counting the days. Hey, most of us don't give a bat. But it is pretty cool seeing how fired up all those crazy fans get.
THUMBS DOWN
1. Bud Selig/Donald Fehr. Let's just put them up here at No.1 every week until they hammer out a new basic agreement. Or better still, put them out in the chilly rain in the Reds' ticket line.
2. Formula One. Formula yeah, we'll say. Rubens Barrichello letting teammate Michael Schumacher pass him to win the Austrian Grand Prix had to be auto racing's best teamwork since the Masked Racer helped a blind Speed Racer win. Most hokey ending since then, too.
3. Ohio senators. Their attempt to change the transfer rules for high school athletes is certainly their prerogative. But, really, shouldn't they have better things to address? And shouldn't the Ohio High School Athletic Associations know better?
4. Martina Hingis. Hey, maybe we're totally off base here. But we couldn't help but wonder about the announcement she might have to retire early because of joint injuries in the wake of her $40 million lawsuit against the company that produced the shoes she wore as a child.
5. Lance McAlister. There's not a harder-working radio talk show host in town. He comes to work prepared every day, with thought-provoking ideas and statistics. But let's just say we find a bit of irony in one of Pete Rose's biggest backers talking more and more about his own GAMBLING.
