Some Good News

They go distance for kids

map
Cincinnati attorney Tom Gabelman, president of Kelly's Foundation for Children, was among the Flying Pig Marathon runners Sunday who ran for the foundation, which provides services to families of pediatric cancer patients at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

He admits his running is nothing to brag about, even though he finished in the top half in 4:20. Still, he shaved 20 minutes off his time a year ago.

“This Pig Marathon was part of our "Make It Count' campaign,” Mr. Gabelman said. “We had 15 other runners from the foundation in a -mile run.”

Kelly's Foundation was founded a year ago, named after Kelly Gabelman, Mr. Gabelman's niece, who died of leukemia at age 18 in 1996.

The foundation has helped about 30 families, providing transportation and laptops for hospitalized kids so they can stay in touch with their friends and families.

It has provided grocery gift certificates and it funds utility payments, household and day-care expenses, automobile repairs and funerals.

The foundation has also provided care packages for children.

It works primarily with Children's Hospital in Cincinnati and Columbus to determine how best to help each child and family.

The foundation's annual fund campaign, “Make It Count,” is dedicated to those children and families affected by cancer. The campaign was kicked off via the marathon.

“Participating in the marathon event is a way of conveying to others that we will go the distance and expend the efforts necessary to help children and families impacted by cancer,” Mr. Gabelman said.

Gowri Ramadas, an Indian Hill High School junior, will again sponsor a walk-a-thon on Mother's Day to raise funds for breast-cancer research.

It will be from 10-11 a.m. Sunday at Sharon Woods. It usually raises $1,500 to $2,000.

Gowri's motto is: “Every child needs a healthy mother.”

She spends the summer working in cancer research at the University of Cincinnati Barrett Center.

Members of Boy Scout Troop 682 from St. Vivian Church in Finneytown will collect items to take to Harlan County, Ky., a coal-mining community.

The area is extremely poor because coal mining is a depressed business in that area.

The Scouts will collect personal-care items, first-aid supplies, diapers, and nonperishable food.

Among the Scout members is Alex Irvine, who has Asperger's Syndrome, a developmental disorder. Alex is earning his Eagle Scout rank, achieved by only 1 percent of Scouts.
