Women's champ sets record

By Howard Wilkinson, hwilkinson@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Nearly 7,300 runners and walkers began in a dense fog and ended in brilliant sunshine Sunday morning in a Flying Pig Marathon that saw a course record shattered.

Tatyana Pozdnyakova, a 47-year-old Ukrainian runner, finished the 26.2-mile course first among women with a time of 2 hours, 34 minutes and 35 seconds — a record for women in the 4-year-old marathon.

Ms. Pozdnyakova, who trains in Gainesville, Fla., bested the old record by nearly 15 minutes. The record was set last year by Rebecca Gallaher, who did not compete this year.

Cornelio Velasco, a Mexican runner who trains in Chicago, was the men's winner, with a time of 2:31:13.

Isaac Barnes, a Williamsport, Ohio, runner, finished second with a time of 2:31:31 while a former Cincinnatian, Scott Young of Tucson, Ariz., finished third at 2:31:53.

Runners from 49 states and at least nine countries participated in the Flying Pig Marathon, an event that began and ended at Yeatman's Cove after winding its way through Cincinnati streets.

Although it did not exist only five years ago, the Flying Pig Marathon has become one of the top 20 long-distance races in the country.

Sunday morning, thousands lined the streets of Cincinnati to cheer on the runners, walkers and wheelchair participants.

Nearly 3,500 local people — all of them clad in “Official Grunt” T-shirts — volunteered along the route. They passed out “goodie” bags to participants, handed out cups of water and Gatorade, and gave out souvenir “Flying Pig” backpacks.

Flying Pig Marathon spokeswoman Suzanne Deatherage said 7,230 men and women participated in the marathon and relay events, while another 1,203 ran a 5-mile course.
