Peers name Pirtle top Ohio coach

Enquirer news services

The University of Cincinnati's Laurie Pirtle has been selected by her peers as the Ohio women's basketball coach of the year in balloting sponsored by the Columbus Dispatch.

Pirtle has led the Bearcats to four straight 20-victory seasons. They finished 27-5 this season and won a first-round game in the NCAA tournament. She received seven of 26 first-place votes and had 34 total points in balloting among the state's coaches. Jerry Scheve of Wilmington was second.

Pirtle, who has coached the Bearcats for 16 years, credited UC'S administration with providing enough aid to turn the Bearcats into a nationally ranked team. “Cincinnati made a huge investment in women's basketball eight years ago,” she said.
