Ducks goalie added to Team USA roster

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Cincinnati Mighty Ducks goaltender Gregg Naumenko has been named to Team USA for the 2002 International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships April 27-May 11 in Sweden. Naumenko, 25, went 2-4-0 with a 2.47 goals-against average and .928 save percentage in seven games with Cincinnati this season.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pounder ranks first on Cincinnati's all-time career goaltending leader list in games (96), wins (39) and minutes played (5,319).

Dallas defenseman Derian Hatcher and veteran forward Ted Donato were also added.

BLUE JACKETS: Columbus signed left wing Jody Shelley to a multiyear contract. Shelley, 26, had three goals and three assists in 52 games last season in his rookie year with the Blue Jackets. He also set a club record with 206 penalty minutes.

Because of his willingness to fight, Shelley became a favorite of the Blue Jackets' fans. By the end of the season, he was greeted by chants of “Shel-ley! Shel-ley!” every time he was involved in a skirmish on the ice.

WHITECOTTON HONORED: The United Hockey League named former Miami University center Dustin Whitecotton of the Missouri River Otters the Most Sportsmanlike Player.

Whitecotton, 22, completed his second pro season with 95 points (37 goals, 58 assists) in 65 games, tying him for fifth in the UHL. He also spent eight games with AHL Grand Rapids. He amassed 41 points (17-24) in four seasons at Miami.

        • Forward Jason Deskins, who recently exhausted his eligibility at Miami, had two goals and six assists in seven ECHL playoff games with Trenton.
