Walk honors Mason staffer

Shelley Marshall Memorial debuts

By Sarah Buehrle
Enquirer contributor

MASON — Matt Marshall says a walk in honor of his late wife would benefit not only the community but his family.

Shelley Marshall, a guidance counselor at Mason High School for nearly two years, and before that, a Mason sixth-grade teacher, died at age 29 on March 30, 2001. The death was attributed to a mitral valve prolapse.

To honor her, Helpers of People Everywhere (HOPE), a high school service club, organized the inaugural Shelley Marshall Memorial Walk Saturday to raise money for the Shelley Marshall Memorial Scholarship. Mr. Marshall, Shelley's husband of six years, said Saturday's walk will benefit the couple's two daughters, Abbey, 3, and Katey, 18 months.

“When I tell Abbey, "These are all the people that love Mommy,' ... I think that's kind of neat,” said Mr. Marshall, who is raising the girls in Liberty Township.

The girls will start off the 2.8-mile walk.

Sponsored in part by the Kiwanis Club of Mason, the walk has already raised $7,805 for the scholarship. Monica Schneider, HOPE adviser, said each year the scholarship will award a Mason student $500.

Mr. Marshall, a member of the scholarship committee, stays involved with the school so his daughters will know what type of person their mother was.

“She was always giving to people and this way she's continuing to give,” Mr. Marshall said.

Sally Shields, interim principal at Mason High School, said it is not unusual for the community to show an outpouring of support for a teacher like Mrs. Marshall.

“She was so student-centered and was very effective as a guidance counselor,” Ms. Shields said.

The walk will begin at 8 a.m. in the Mason Middle School parking lot, 707 Mason-Montgomery Road. People can still sign up to walk Saturday.

        Cost: $10 adults ($12 with a T-shirt); $5 children ($7 with shirt).

        Information: 398-5025, ext. 42030.
