Local jockey riding Oaks favorite

A dominating victory in Saturday's Grade I Ashland Stakes at Keeneland probably made Select Stable's Take Charge Lady the favorite in the May 3 Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs.

“This filly has developed,” jockey Tony D'Amico said. “She's so much bigger and stronger now.”

The win was a first in a Grade I stakes for Northern Kentuckian D'Amico, 46, who has been riding for 28 years, mostly in Ohio and Kentucky.

It's been a bittersweet season for D'Amico, who was replaced as the rider on Kentucky Derby contenders Harlan's Holiday and Repent (since injured) for trainer Ken McPeek and Lane's End Spiral Stakes winner Perfect Drift.

“The Ashland kind of made up for it,” D'Amico said. “It takes a lot of the hurt away.”
