Students will tackle race

By Michael D. Clark mclark@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

A racial diversity rally for Greater Cincinnati youth is the right sort of event at the right time, says Cincinnati Mayor Charlie Luken.

Later this month, 400 suburban and urban high school students will attend the area's first Youth Leadership Seminar on racial relations at Xavier University's Cintas Center.

Mr. Luken will be the opening speaker at the April 17 youth rally sponsored by NFL Hall of Famer Anthony Munoz and his local charity foundation. Among the goals is to return the students to their schools as racial “ambassadors” for diversity education, and to recruit other students for future rallies.

“This is just the kind of thing the city needs. I thought it was great getting young people to talk about race,” said Mr. Luken in explaining his participation.

He praised the rally's sponsors, especially Mr. Munoz, saying the former Bengal and community activist “is the kind of guy who can bring people together.”

The diversity rally, believed to be the first of its scope in Greater Cincinnati, is designed to foster racial understanding among students in 35 city and suburban high schools.

Freshmen, sophomores and juniors will participate. ball coaches whose true story of overcoming racism inspired the Hollywood hit movie Remember the Titans.
