Compiled by Chuck Martin cmartin@enquirer.com

Just In

        • The sap season is over and the Motz family has its thick and smoky-sweet dark amber maple syrup in the bottle. Matt Motz and his cousin, Edmund, won a blue ribbon at the Ohio State Fair last summer for their Clough Valley Maple Syrup. The Motzes collect the sap from maple trees on their Anderson Township farm and cook it down in their “sugar shack.” The family sells the syrup ($8 per pint or $10 per 10 ounces in maple leaf gift bottle) 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. 5531 Clough Pike; 232-2344.

        • Virginia Bakery in Clifton has fired up the schnecken ovens for the Easter holiday. The bakery will sell the sticky, sweet German pastries on a first-come, first-served basis on these dates: 9 a.m.-noon Saturday; 8 a.m.-noon March 29; and 8 a.m.-noon March 30. Schnecken is $6.50 per loaf. Bread, dinner rolls and other pastries also available.

& Most might consider dandelions a pesky weed, but Europeans and Americans have been eating the greens in fresh and wilted salads, or braised as a vegetable, for years. Dandelions are best in the spring, when they're most tender. When small and pale, use alone in salads; when larger and firmer, mix with other salad greens or cook. Choose dandelions with thin stems. Avoid flabby leaves that are yellowing or brown-tinged. Wrap tightly in plastic and refrigerate for up to a few days. In salads, dress dandelions with vinaigrettes made with balsamic, sherry or fruit-flavored vinegars. Cook the greens with bacon, ham or other pork, gently for 15 minutes, or until tender.
Uncommon Fruits & Vegetables (Morrow; $28)

Hot Date

Parishioners at Sacred Heart Church in Camp Washington (2733 Massachusetts Ave.) host their 91st annual Palm Sunday Ravioli Dinner noon-6 p.m. Sunday Meals include homemade ravioli, salad and dessert. $7 adults; $3 children. Meals also available for takeout. 541-4654.
