Tennis Masters Series flips finals
Enquirer news services
For the first time in 33 years, the doubles final of the Tennis Masters Series Cincinnati has been scheduled to be played before the singles final.
Both finals are set for Aug.11 at the ATP Tennis Center in Mason. This year, the doubles final will begin at 1p.m., and the singles final will start at 4p.m. In the past, the singles final started at1 p.m., followed by the doubles final.
The change was made to accommodate ESPN's live national broadcast.
Tournament director Bruce Flory said that if at least one player is in both finals, the doubles final will be played after the 4 p.m. singles final. That has happened only once in Cincinnati in the past 10 years (Stefan Edberg, 1993).
The tournament also announced that the first semifinal match Aug.10 will start at noon, an hour earlier than in previous years.
The Tennis Masters Series Cincinnati will take place Aug.1-11.
