First-round GLVC loss stuns NKU men

But Sanders becomes team's top career scorer

Enquirer news services

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Brian Maastricht scored 24 of his 30 points in the second half Thursday as the University of Wisconsin-Parkside rallied to upset Northern Kentucky University 93-87 in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament in Roberts Stadium.

Quincey Moman added 24 points — 20 in the second half — as Wisconsin-Parkside (14-13) became the first No.7 seed in GLVC Tournament history to win a game. The Rangers rallied from a 37-29 halftime deficit by shooting 64.3 percent from the field in the second half.

“We allowed 64 points in the second half, and you can't do that and expect to win,” NKU coach Ken Shields said. “This is a very costly loss, and it's a disappointment.”

The loss, combined with Lewis' victory over Bellarmine later Thursday, ended NKU's hopes of earning a bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament. The Norse, who entered the GLVC Tournament as the No.2 seed, dropped to 19-8.

Going into the GLVC Tournament, NKU was ranked No.6 in the NCAA II Great Lakes Region poll. The top six teams will advance to the NCAA Tournament, but NKU will drop out when the pairings are announced Sunday night.

Craig Sanders led NKU with 31 points and became the Norse's all-time career scoring leader midway through the first half when he made a 3-point shot. Sanders, a graduate of McNicholas High School, has scored 2,007 points.

Brenden Stowers (Simon Kenton HS) added 16 points, and Carl Mitchell finished with 14 points.
