Fourth-graders try hands at stamp design
DEERFIELD TWP. Flags and Olympic Games symbols decorate the Kings Mills Post Office lobby as Kings Mills Elementary fourth-grade students compete for the best stamp design.
The post office has received 25 entries for the contest, open only to KME fourth-graders. Postal sales associate Maryan Harrison said the contest has no theme, but most chose to depict patriotic symbols.
I think they did a fantastic job, Ms. Harrison said. I'm glad I'm not a judge.
Deerfield Township officials will judge the designs Feb. 26. First prize is a framed 18-by-26-inch Snoopy stamp poster. The contest is part of an annual community outreach effort.
Bonni Manies of the Cincinnati post office said student designs have been used for U.S. stamps before, but the competition is stiff 30,000 to 40,000 stamp subjects are presented to the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee yearly.
