3-pointers help Marshall outlast Miami

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. Ronald Blackshear scored 29 points and hit eight of Marshall's 12 3-points as the Thundering Herd beat Miami of Ohio 82-74 Thursday night.
The Thundering Herd (12-11, 6-7 Mid-American Conference) snapped Miami's three-game winning streak by shooting 52 percent from the field, 12-of-18 on 3-point attempts. Blackshear shot 9-of-16, 8-of-12 on 3s.
The fifth-place Herd also drew closer to the fourth-place RedHawks (11-13, 8-5) in the race to play at home in the first round of the MAC tournament. The top four East Division finishers get a home game.
J.R. VanHoose scored 14 points for Marshall, Tamar Slay added 13, Monty Wright had 12 and Latece Williams scored 11. Wright also had nine assists.
Doug Davis led Miami with 15 points. Eugene Seals and Alex Shorts each scored 12 points and Larry Drake added 10. Seals also had 10 rebounds.
Blackshear scored 11 points on four consecutive possessions to give the Herd a 61-51 lead with 9:40 to play.
After hitting back-to-back 3-pointers, Blackshear was fouled while shooting a 3 and hit two of the three free throws. He then made another 3-pointer on Marshall's next possession.
Miami pulled within 73-71 with 1:32 remaining, but Marshall hit 9-of-10 free throws over the last 1:16 to ice the game.
