Some Good News

Top teens dance with patients

map
Their memories may be gone, but maybe a twinkle of yesterday can come back on a dance floor.

Residents at the Arden Courts of Kenwood Alzheimer's Assisted Living will get that special chance today during an intergenerational dance.

About 35 Deer Park High School Honor Society students will have dates with the residents and team up on the dance floor.

“The students wanted to do a service project with our residents, and we suggested a dance,” said Andria Powell, program-service coordinator for Arden Courts. “We prepared a summary of the 26 residents here and presented them to the students. The students were able to pick their dates.”

Students will be dressed in semi-formal and formal attire. Some will bring corsages for their dates. The residents will be similarly dressed.

The dance will be held at the assisted-living building, 4580 E. Galbraith Road, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The music will be big-band style by the Stan Piates band.

“Some of our residents have actually done ballroom dancing. I think this is going to be fun for both the students and residents,” Ms. Powell said.

She said the event promotes intergenerational voluntarism, sense of self-worth along with diversity of the residents and students.

Four million people in the United States suffer from Alzheimer's disease, and more than 25,000 live in Hamilton County.

Hey guys, would you like to be put on an auction block and have a community bid for your volunteer services in your area of expertise?

The Store House of Open Windows, an interdenominational, faith-based, nonprofit organization, will conduct a “Kings of the Queen City Male Auction” for community services from 5-9 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Quality Inn, 1717 Glendale-Milford Road, Evendale.

Dorothea Miller is director of Store House of Open Windows.

The agency, she said, was borne out of a need to help women and their families where other resources have fallen short.

Ms. Miller is a retired deputy clerk of the Hamilton County Juvenile Court. There, she said, she saw the need for this type of organization. For more information, call 351-9711.
