Kansas survives Longhorns

No. 2 Jayhawks 11-0 in Big 12

The Associated Press

AUSTIN, Texas — Kansas' bid for an undefeated season in the Big 12 is still alive — barely. All it took was 110 points and some clutch 3-point shooting in overtime.

Drew Gooden scored 28 points and Jeff Boschee hit two 3s in overtime as the second-ranked Jayhawks survived a furious upset bid by Texas with a 110-103 victory Monday night.

Kansas (22-2, 11-0) kept alive its bid to win its first Big 12 regular season title since 1998 and be the league's first team to go undefeated in conference play.

“I thought we did lose our poise,” Kansas coach Roy Williams said. “But I think we answered their baskets and challenges.”

The Longhorns, who matched Kansas' vaunted transition game nearly basket for basket, gave up 100 points for the first time since a 102-72 defeat to the Jayhawks in 1997-98.

Brandon Mouton had 25 points for Texas (16-8, 7-4), which dropped to 53-1 when scoring 100 points at home.

It was Texas' second overtime loss at home to a Top Ten team this season. Oklahoma beat Texas 85-84 in overtime on Feb. 2.

“We're right there. We're close,” Texas coach Rick Barnes said. “We lost two overtime games at home to teams everyone's talking about getting No. 1 seeds.”

Barnes said he thought his team could match Kansas' ability to push the ball up the floor quickly.

“We were not going to not run,” Barnes said. “We ran and we really made great decisions.”

The game was played at a lightning quick pace as the teams played within three points of each other for most of the second half.

Gooden did most his damage in the second half after shooting just 2-of-9 and picking up three fouls in the opening 20 minutes.

“I basically went into the locker room to get my mind right,” Gooden said.
