No. 2 Kansas routs No. 22 Missouri

The Associated Press

LAWRENCE, Kan. — The grin on Drew Gooden's face said it all. “I feel great out there. Just look out there on the court, and you can see how much fun I'm having,” Gooden said Monday night after getting 26 points and 10 rebounds in No. 2 Kansas' 105-73 victory over No. 22 Missouri.

“I knew going in I was going to be hot,” said Gooden, who hit his first six shots and scored 17 points in the first half of his first-ever start against the Tigers. “I wanted the ball on every possession, and I was going to put it up until I missed.”

But Gooden, who recorded his 16th double-double of the season as the Jayhawks pulled away from a one-point halftime lead, wasn't the only star in Kansas' biggest win over Missouri since a 100-66 victory in 1986.

Kirk Hinrich went 8-for-11 from the field — 4-of-5 from 3-point range — and finished with a season-high 23 points. He also helped hold Missouri forward Kareem Rush, a preseason All-American, to 13 points on 6-for-19 shooting.

“Hinrich, I think, gets overlooked sometimes because all of those guys are so good,” said Missouri coach Quin Snyder, whose team fell to 6-6 since starting the season 9-0 and being ranked No. 2.

Hinrich's accuracy and Gooden's 11-for-15 shooting helped Kansas outshoot the Tigers 62 percent to 40 percent.

Jeff Boschee and Nick Collison each had 13 points for the Jayhawks (18-2, 7-0 Big 12), who outscored Missouri by 20 points over the first 6 1/2 minutes of the second half. All but two of Collison's points came in the second half.

“The second half was quite a game,” Kansas coach Roy Williams said. “Besides two or three slip-ups, we were sensational. It seemed like in the second half, everything went great for us and bad for them.”

It was the worst loss of the season for Missouri (15-6, 5-3). The Jayhawks last scored 100 points against the Tigers in a 102-89 victory in 1995.

“They just came out and put it on us,” said Missouri guard Clarence Gilbert, who was 5-for-9 from 3-point range and scored 19 points but was held to three points in the second half.

He then added an open message to his teammates:

“To put that jersey on, it means a lot,” Gilbert said. “Guys, you wore that jersey with pride. You can't lose by 30. You have to bring it night in and night out.”

Rickey Paulding also had 19 points for the Tigers.

Freshman Wayne Simien had 10 points for Kansas.

The Jayhawks got off to a quick start in the second half, with Hinrich scoring five points in a 7-0 run for a 50-42 lead. Boschee hit 3-pointers to open and close a 10-0 run that made it 60-45, and two free throws by Keith Langford capped an 8-0 run that gave Kansas a 68-47 lead with 13:36 left.

“It was unbelievably loud for 40 minutes,” Missouri center Arthur Johnson said of the crowd at Allen Fieldhouse. “I couldn't even hear myself think. At the half, we were playing pretty good, and I thought I had a handle on the game, but (Kansas) had great pressure.”

Gooden scored five points in another 10-0 run that put the Jayhawks up 81-58 with just over 8 1/2 minutes left.

Kansas outshot Missouri 59 percent to 45 percent from the field in the first half, but the Tigers were 8-of-15 on 3-pointers — four by Gilbert — and trailed just 43-42 at halftime.

Gooden's three-point play with 7:05 left in the half capped a 14-3 run and gave the Jayhawks a 35-25 lead. Missouri answered with a 13-3 run in which Gilbert scored eight points and hit two 3-pointers, including one that tied it 38-all with 3:14 left in the half.
