Writers to talk about race in series at UC
By Denise Smith Amos
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The University of Cincinnati's Department of English invites the public to its series called Ropes, featuring prominent writers who lecture and participate in public dialogues.
Stanley Corkin, a UC English professor, said the April riots and the Sept. 11 attacks gave him the theme for Ropes this year.
Race is not simply a category defined by black and white. The series will look at the term in all its varieties, he said.
For instance, Caryl Phillips is a Caribbean-born novelist, raised in England, who has written about the African slave trade.
Noel Ignatiev, a fellow at Harvard University, will discuss the social consequences of the category of whiteness.
Bharati Mukherjee and Suvir Kaul are writers of South Asian background.
The schedule:
Tuesday: Noel Ignatiev on Abolish the White Race, Room 127, McMicken Hall. 8 p.m.
Wednesday: Public dialogue with Noel Ignatiev, Caryl Phillips and Reggie Boyd. Elliston Room in Langsam Library. 2 p.m.
Thursday: Caryl Phillips on The High Anxiety of Belonging, Room 127, McMicken. 8 p.m.
