Schools search for insurance
The Associated Press
COLUMBUS Nearly all of Ohio's school districts are scrambling to find liability, transportation or property insurance coverage before their plans expire Feb. 1 because a deal with a carrier fell through late last year.
Some districts say they may have to temporarily close their schools until they secure insurance. But many districts say that's unlikely to happen.
The Ohio School Boards Association said Wednesday that its broker, Harcum-Hyre Insurance Agency Inc., found an insurer last week to offer an alternative insurance plan. The association provides insurance to 95 percent of Ohio's 613 districts.
John Brandt, executive director of the association, said districts should receive quotes this week from The Hartford Financial Services Group Inc.
Once the districts receive the quotes, the local school boards must meet to determine whether they will accept the policy or shop around for a better deal.
