Sanders scores 31 points as NKU tops Saint Joseph's

The Cincinnati Enquirer

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. — Craig Sanders scored 31 points and made two clutch free throws late in the game Saturday as Northern Kentucky University defeated Saint Joseph's College 90-85 in Regents Hall.

NKU (11-4, 7-2 Great Lakes Valley Conference) built a 17-point lead early in the first half, but Saint Joseph's cut the deficit to 10 points at halftime. The Pumas eventually took an 84-79 lead with 3:29 remaining on a basket by Jamie Holden.

Two free throws by Mike Kelsey followed by a 3-point basket by Brenden Stowers tied the game at 84-84. Stowers (Simon Kenton High) then made a pair of free throws with 1:36 left.

Sanders (McNicholas) converted a pair of free throws at the 1:28 mark for an 88-84 lead, and NKU held off Saint Joseph's for its fifth straight victory.

“We did not play our best game at all, but we made some big shots down the stretch,” NKU coach Ken Shields said. “Saint Joseph's beat us twice last season, so we knew this would be a tough game.”

Carl Mitchell added 19 points, 15 rebounds and three blocked shots for NKU.

Mount St. Joseph 96, Defiance 92 (OT)

Steve Bain (Elder) and Joe Toney (Harrison) scored 19 points each to help the Mount (5-10) even its record at 3-3 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Defiance (8-8, 3-3) outrebounded MSJ 42-32 but committed 28 turnovers.

Hanover 63, Thomas More 55

Joe Neuman's 13 points led three Hanover players scoring in double figures, and Thomas More fell to 3-13.

Nick Love (St.Henry) and Mark Klein (St.Xavier) each scored nine points for TMC. Chad Wachs (Covington Catholic) added eight points and eight rebounds.
