Stone joins Cardinals

Joins squad after meeting with Pitino

The Associated Press

LOUISVILLE — Former Kentucky center/forward Marvin Stone joined the Louisville basketball team after meeting with coach Rick Pitino on Saturday morning.

The 6-foot-10 junior was dismissed from the Wildcats in late December when he didn't return to Lexington following the Christmas break.

Stone said he was interested in transfering to Louisville to play for Pitino, who coached Kentucky from 1989-97. Kentucky initially blocked Stone's intention, citing an unwritten policy preventing players from leaving for schools that regularly appeared on the Wildcats' schedule. Louisville and Kentucky have played every season since 1983.

On Friday, Kentucky reversed its position, releasing Stone to transfer anywhere he wanted. Pitino said Friday he wanted to meet with Stone, and said he wouldn't consider adding him to the Louisville roster until he had.

Pitino, Stone and Stone's mother met Saturday in Louisville, hours before the Cardinals played Texas Christian.

Stone watched Louisville's 93-85 victory from the bench, but was not available for comment afterward.

Stone's mother persuaded Pitino to take her son in a phone conversation on Friday night.

“I didn't have to speak to Marvin after speaking with his mom,” Pitino said. “I wish more parents were like her. She's the type of lady that, you get on the wrong side of her, you're going to get a broom over your head. She's a strong disciplinarian.”
