OXFORD For the second consecutive game, Juby Johnson scored a career high, as Miami (5-9, 2-1 Mid-American Conference) defeated Marshall 80-65 Wednesday for its first winning streak of the season.
You can't let a young guy like Johnson get going, Marshall coach Greg White said of the sophomore. Once he makes one (3-pointer) he's likely to keep shooting and not miss.
White watched Johnson scorch Marshall from behind the arc, hitting six of his eight attempts and scoring a game-high 26 points. Johnson had set a personal best with 18 points in Miami's win Saturday at Central Michigan.
Johnson was aided by point guard Chester Mason, who was able to penetrate the defense and find an open Johnson in the corner for the 3. Mason set career highs with nine assists and 18 points.
I like to pass and build up assists, Mason said. It's easy when a guy gets hot. You just look for him and you got an assist. (Juby) was automatic tonight.
Miami enjoyed its return to Millett Hall, where it hadn't played in more than a month. The RedHawks connected on 11 of 20 3-point attempts; coming into the game, the RedHawks were shooting just 38 percent from 3-point range.
Johnson was more than just offense Wednesday. He blanketed Marshall's top offensive threat, Tamar Slay, from the tipoff. Johnson's flailing arms threw Slay, a preseason all-MAC pick, off his game and limited him to a season-low five points on 2-of-7 shooting. Johnson never fouled him.
White became so upset with his star player that he sat him on the bench for the majority of the second half.
(Slay) is a great player in this league, Johnson said of the senior, who considered leaving for the NBA after last season. I take pride in my defense and want to be known as good defender along with my offense.
Marshall was led by Ronald Blackshear's 19 points.
Early in the second half, Miami built its lead to as many as 20 points after taking a 40-27 advantage into halftime. Blackshear brought Marshall (7-6, 2-2 MAC) within eight with 5:12 to go, but Johnson hit a 3 in transition to help push Miami's lead back to 11.
We came out in the first half with a lot of electricity, said Miami coach Charlie Coles. I think we are starting to shoot the ball better, and being home has a lot to do with that.
