Cincy ATP mulls cutting purse
The Cincinnati Enquirer and wire reports
Cincinnati's ATP tournament in Mason faces a possible cut in its $2.95 million purse money, according to Street & Smith's Sports Business Journal. The economy has forced the tour to hire an accounting firm to explore slashing prize money.
All 60 ATP tournaments worldwide are sending financial information to Pricewaterhouse, according to the tournament chairman in Miami, to prove to the ATP, which represents both players and tournaments, that a prize money cut is necessary.
Five of the 15 North American events have no title sponsors, including Cincinnati. ATP spokesman David Higdon said the upper-class Masters Series, four of which are in North America and include Cincinnati, probably would face cutbacks before an across-the-board paring to all 15 events. A decision is expected during next week's Australian Open.
The Cincinnati event is scheduled to start Aug.5 at the ATP Tennis Center near Kings Island.
