        DETROIT — Brendan Shanahan scored his 20th goal and added an assist as Detroit beat Columbus in its first game of the season without captain Steve Yzerman.

        Yzerman may be out 1-to-2 weeks with a high ankle bruise after being hit by a shot from Minnesota's Filip Kuba on Wednesday.

        Detroit, which has an NHL-best 58 points, extended its unbeaten streak to five games.

        In addition to Shanahan's second-period goal, which extended his streak with at least 20 goals to 14 seasons, Mathieu Dandenault, Luc Robitaille, Pavel Datsyuk and Nicklas Lidstrom scored.

        Mike Sillinger scored for the Blue Jackets.

        Detroit's Manny Legace, who gave Dominik Hasek a rest, stopped 27 shots.

        Hurricanes 3, Lightning 2

        TAMPA, Fla. — Aaron Ward scored his first goal in 64 games as the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 on Thursday night.

        Ward snapped a 2-2 tie with 42.7 seconds left in the second period when his shot from the top of the right circle deflected off a Tampa Bay stick.

        Carolina is 7-1-0-2 in its past 10 games, and holds a 13-point lead over the Lightning and the Washington Capitals in the Southeast Division.

        Ron Francis and Sami Kapanen added Carolina goals.

        Fredrik Modin and Juha Ylonen scored for Tampa Bay.

        Senators 5, Islanders 2

        OTTAWA — Marian Hossa scored his 12th of the season on a power play with 14:50 left in the third as Ottawa spoiled Alexei Yashin's return to the Corel Centre with a win over New York.

        Radek Bonk scored twice, and Andre Roy and Wade Redden also scored for the Senators as the sold-out crowd of 18,500 enthusiastically booed Yashin — Ottawa's all-time leading scorer — every time he came in contact with the puck.

        Shawn Bates and Mariusz Czerkawski scored for New York, which twice led the game.

        Blackhawks 3, Avalanche 1

        CHICAGO — Steve Passmore, making just his fifth start of the season, stopped 23 shots and recorded an assist as Chicago defeated Colorado.

        It was Colorado's second loss in 17 games (12-2-3).

        Jim Campbell and Bob Probert scored their first goals of the season to help the Blackhawks move ahead of the Avalanche into second place in the Western Conference.

        Eric Daze added an empty-net goal for the Blackhawks.

        Colorado goaltender Patrick Roy, who posted his 500th career win at Dallas Wednesday, was given the night off for David Aebischer, who blocked 19 shots.

        Steven Reinprecht scored for the Avalanche.

        Mighty Ducks 2, Kings 2

        LOS ANGELES — Bryan Smolinski punctuated his 30th birthday by scoring the tying goal with 12:54 remaining as Los Angeles earned a draw with Anaheim.

        The game was played before a sellout crowd of 18,610, the largest ever to see an NHL game in Southern California.

        Brad Chartrand also scored and Ian Laperriere had two assists for the Kings.

        Matt Cullen and Jeff Friesen scored for the Ducks.

        Canucks 4, Flames 2

        VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Markus Naslund and Andrew Cassels each had a goal and an assist as Vancouver snapped a three-game losing skid with a win over Calgary.

        Todd Bertuzzi and Trevor Linden also scored and Jan Hlavac added two assists for the Canucks, who won for just the fourth time in the last 14 games (4-8-2).

        Craig Conroy and Dean McAmmond scored for the Flames, who lost for the second time in as many nights and now have just three wins in their last 19 games (3-11-5).
