HAMILTON Talk about mixed greens Butler County Sheriff's deputies said Monday they had seized 200 pounds of marijuana they found hidden in a truckload of broccoli and snow peas.
Rafael Hernandez, 57, of San Antonio, Texas, is charged with trafficking in drugs and possession of drugs, both felonies. Author ities also say they expect to arrest at least two other people locally in connection with the Saturday evening bust.
The high-grade marijuana has a street value of about $500,000. And at 200 pounds, it's the largest pot bust in the history of the Butler County Sheriff's Office and one of the largest ever in Butler County, said Capt. Greg Blankenship.
Authorities say the marijuana originated in Mexico, and was shipped from Texas.
Tightly packed into solid bricks, the marijuana was in a semitrailer carrying 1,200 bushels of broccoli and snow peas, police said. Deputies had to unload the vegetables to find the pot in front of the trailer, they said.
The vegetables are worth about $50,000. They were being shipped to Richmond, Va.
The cab of the truck was reported stolen Wednesday in Texas, Detective Jeff Riegert said.
The drugs were wrapped in several layers of cellophane, fabric softener sheets and axle grease to throw off drug-sniffing dogs, Capt. Blankenship said.
