Shelters' property dispute may displace potbellied pigs
Landowners say they weren't paid for 5-acre farm
the Associated Press
FRANKFORT A property dispute between the owners of two animal shelters could leave dozens of discarded Vietnamese potbellied pigs homeless.
Michelle Joyce, who runs one of the shelters, says that unless something changes, she and the 60 potbellied pigs residing at a Bald Knob farm will have to go elsewhere soon.
Ms. Joyce said she moved The Dignified Pig nonprofit shelter to Franklin County from Massachusetts a year ago in the hopes of purchasing the 5 acres of property in Bald Knob.
The Dignified Pig set up shop on the property of Jim Morris and Tamara Schwiteizer, who run the Safe Harboar pig shelter on the same property.
Ms. Joyce says she gave the couple $10,000 for the land.
But Mr. Morris said Ms. Joyce never paid any money to buy the property.
Lawyers for both parties agreed that Ms. Joyce would be off the land by Nov. 30, but The Dignified Pig remains. Ms. Joyce, who wants her $10,000 back, visits her pigs, but must walk a half-mile now after the shelter was fenced off by Mr. Morris and Ms. Schwiteizer.
