Woman to take Olympic torch through Frankfort

The Associated Press

PINE RIDGE — The Olympic flame may burn just a little brighter as its torch is passed into the 85-year-old hands of Louise Lee Winchip of Wolfe County on the morning of Dec. 17 — when the Olympic torch relay makes its way through Frankfort.

“Miss Chip,” as she's been known 57 years at the Dessie Scott Children's Home, will carry the torch in a wheelchair pushed by a friend.

“It's a great honor, but I'm a little bit nervous about it and overwhelmed,” said Ms. Winchip, who was nominated by an admirer of her work.

“I'm not sure why they chose me,” she said. “And I don't know how I'm going to feel when the day really comes.”

Ms. Winchip is one of only five torchbearers who are being profiled by an Olympic television presentation as the torch makes its way to the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.

Ms. Winchip's story was a top choice after the production team learned of her more than half-century of service to orphaned, abused and homeless children in Eastern Kentucky.
