Girls basketball roundup


No. 1 McNick falls to Chaminade-Julienne

        Dayton Chaminade-Julienne defeated defending Division II state champion McNicholas, ranked No.1 in The Enquirer's Divisions II-IV area coaches poll, 62-40 in the first round of the Vandalia Butler Invitational Friday.

        In the second game, Kristen Mahon sank two free throws with 13 seconds remaining to lift St. Ursula, ranked No.2 in The Enquirer's Division I poll, to a 35-34 victory over Lakota West.

        St. Ursula plays Chaminade-Julienne at 6 p.m. today for the championship. McNicholas and Lakota West play at 4:30 p.m. in the consolation game.

        “They (C-J) are the best girls team I've seen play,” McNicholas coach Rob Heise said. “I didn't see the Mason teams when they had the (NCAA Division I-caliber) players, but C-J is awful good.”

        Senior guard Megan Duffy, who committed last year to Notre Dame, scored 15 points for the Eagles and forward Brandi Hoskins led all scorers with 17 points.

        “I told the kids after the game that C-J is the best defensive team they'll play against this year,” Heise said. “Their defense is amazing and took everything away that we tried to do.”

        St. Ursula led only twice in its game with Lakota West and trailed most of the game until outscoring the Firebirds 9-6 in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.

        Mahon led the Bulldogs with 14 points, and forward/center Monica Naltner finished with 10 points.

        Stephanie Comisar, who had 12 points, was the only Lakota West player to score in double figures.

        • Clinton Massie 52, Blanchester 25, Clinton County Invitational at Clinton Massie — Mindy Wood scored six points in the first quarter when Clinton Massie took a 15-4 lead, and McKenzi King added six in the second quarter for a 23-8 halftime lead.

        Clinton Massie will play East Clinton in tonight's championship after Blanchester plays Wilmington in the consolation at 6 p.m.
