Girls basketball roundup
No. 1 McNick falls to Chaminade-Julienne
Dayton Chaminade-Julienne defeated defending Division II state champion McNicholas, ranked No.1 in The Enquirer's Divisions II-IV area coaches poll, 62-40 in the first round of the Vandalia Butler Invitational Friday.
In the second game, Kristen Mahon sank two free throws with 13 seconds remaining to lift St. Ursula, ranked No.2 in The Enquirer's Division I poll, to a 35-34 victory over Lakota West.
St. Ursula plays Chaminade-Julienne at 6 p.m. today for the championship. McNicholas and Lakota West play at 4:30 p.m. in the consolation game.
They (C-J) are the best girls team I've seen play, McNicholas coach Rob Heise said. I didn't see the Mason teams when they had the (NCAA Division I-caliber) players, but C-J is awful good.
Senior guard Megan Duffy, who committed last year to Notre Dame, scored 15 points for the Eagles and forward Brandi Hoskins led all scorers with 17 points.
I told the kids after the game that C-J is the best defensive team they'll play against this year, Heise said. Their defense is amazing and took everything away that we tried to do.
