Toledo council approves third online charter school in Ohio
The Associated Press
TOLEDO The University of Toledo Charter School Council approved the state's third online charter school Friday.
The Ohio Distance & Electronic Learning Academy is a learning program operated by Akron-based White Hat Management. The school will provide computers, textbooks and workbooks to students and support parents who are teaching their children at home.
We're very pleased with the board's decision, said Mark Timmig, president of White Hat Ventures. We have worked with the board over the past six months to make the board comfortable with what we're offering.
Mr. Timmig said the school will start enrolling students in December and expects to be teaching up to 1,000 students by the end of the year.
I would expect we'll have a significant interest in the school, he said.
Mr. Timmig said the new charter was granted to nonprofit Alternative Education Academy, which has hired White Hat, the state's largest charter school operator, to run the school.
