Pleasant Plain man killed while trying to evade officer

        SALEM TOWNSHIP — A 58-year-old Pleasant Plain man was killed Thursday afternoon when his car struck a culvert while attempting to elude a pursuing Warren County deputy sheriff.

        Dennis W. Mescher was pronounced dead at the scene of the 2:23 p.m. crash on Morrow-Rossburg Road, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said. According to the highway patrol, Mr. Mescher's vehicle was traveling southeast on Morrow-Rossburg attempting to elude the deputy, who was investigating a report the driver might be intoxicated. After passing a school bus, the victim lost control and went off the the road near Dallasburg Road.

        The car went into a ditch and struck the culvert, causing the vehicle to vault over the intersection before striking a guardrail. Mr. Mescher was ejected from the car.

        Alcohol was involved in the crash, the highway patrol said.
