Volleyball trio underdogs at state
Ursuline, St. Ursula and Roger Bacon have tall tasks at the state volleyball tournament at Wright State University this week.
Ursuline faces the toughest assignment in Thursday's (6 p.m.) Division I semifinals. The Lions face No.1-ranked and undefeated Toledo St. Ursula (27-0), last season's runner-up to Mount Notre Dame.
The Toledo team returns five of six starters, including setter Kaycie Carr, a 5-foot-10 senior, along with a front line that includes four players 5-foot-11 or taller.
St. Ursula won six consecutive Division II state championships (1993-98) and will be making a first appearance in the Division I state semifinals.
The Bulldogs (24-4) play a Youngstown Austintown-Fitch (23-3) that reached the semifinals for the first time in 1999.
If St. Ursula wins the championship, it will tie Newark Catholic for the most overall titles.
The most determined team may be the Roger Bacon Spartans. After finishing in the Division II runner-up spot the past two seasons, coach Caryl Shawe's Spartans (27-1) are primed for a successful run for the championship.
However, Roger Bacon must get by undefeated West Holmes (26-0) in the semifinals before thinking about defending state champion Galion (27-1) in the finale if the Tiger defeat Mentor Lake Catholic.
