PAL club here may be reality

The Police Athletic League tournament (PAL) in which Ron Siler Jr. and several other Greater Cincinnati amateurs will box next weekend may one day soon have a boxing connection in Cincinnati.

“We've been meeting with (Hamilton County Sheriff) Si Leis and (Cincinnati Police Chief) Tom Streicher,” said local pizza magnate Buddy LaRosa, who operates three Golden Gloves gyms here.

“Both are willing to give us the support we need to make the PAL program become a reality, provided that we include a drug-prevention program in it, which we'll do. (Fifth Third Bank CEO) George Schaefer has given us $50,000 of seed money for three years to get (the PAL program) going. We hope to get a gym started in the West End or Over-the-Rhine as our first project, then hopefully have more PAL gyms to come.”

LaRosa said the PAL program is a great way to build a relationship between kids and cops, and has been successful in other cities.
