Ludlow officials get ready to pick a new police chief

By Jim Hannah
The Cincinnati Enquirer

LUDLOW — Eight to 10 people have applied for the chief's job at the Ludlow Police Department.

The vacancy was created by the departure of Tom Collins, who left Aug. 31 for a job as patrolman with the Newport police.

Applications were due Thursday. Mayor Ed Schroeder said the candidates will be interviewed Nov. 14-15. The search committee — made up of Mr. Schroeder, Kenton County Police Chief Bill Dorsey and Ludlow interim Chief Charles Donaldson — will make a recommendation to the Ludlow City Council in early December. The council must approve the recommendation by a vote.

Chief Dorsey said the search committee has yet to meet.

“We are hoping to get someone well-qualified that has a good background,” said Mr. Schroeder. He said Friday afternoon that he hadn't had a chance to review the applications, but that Mr. Donaldson said there were some strong applicants.

Mr. Donaldson couldn't be reached for comment.

Councilman William Froehle said one of the challenges facing a new chief will be hiring enough staff to patrol the growing town.

Population is expected to increase, Mr. Froehle said, with the completion of a multimillion-dollar condominium development, the first of its kind for the riverfront town. He said other real estate brokers are looking at Ludlow as a good place for future development.

Mr. Froehle said some of the better officers from the cash-strapped department are being hired away, another challenge a new chief will face.

Mr. Donaldson, who has not applied for the chief's job, will run the department until a replacement is hired.

Mr. Donaldson was chief of Independence police for 12 years before retiring in 1995. Before that, he was a detective for the Covington Police Department.

He also is a former president of the Kentucky Association of Chiefs of Police.
