Central Florida to play MAC football

The University of Central Florida has joined the Mid-American Conference as a football member, starting next season.

Central Florida's other athletic teams will remain in the Atlantic Sun Conference, which doesn't sponsor Division I-A football. Central Florida has been competing as an independent.

“Membership in the MAC will help our football program in numerous ways,” Central Florida athletics director Steve Sloan said in a statement. “It solves our scheduling dilemma and gives us the opportunity to develop rivalries.”

The Orlando, Fla., school will join the Eastern Division with Miami University, Kent State, Marshall and Ohio University.

The Golden Knights, 4-4 this season, have a 34-29 record since moving to the Division I-A level in 1996, including a 10-4 record against MAC teams. Central Florida's best season in Division I-A came in 1998, when quarterback Daunte Culpepper led the team to a 9-2 record. ”
