Eight compete in Kings

KINGS MILLS There are more candidates on the ballot for Kings Local School District Board of Education than for any other education board race in Warren County, according to the Warren County Board of Elections Web site.
Eight candidates, including the three incumbents, are squaring for three four-yearpositions on the five-member board.
The competition is good for the community, Del Landis, incumbent candidate, wrote in a recent e-mail. It forces candidates to set their personal goals and priorities and it gives the voters a good selection.
Challenger Jean Zito, mother of two Kings district school children, is a district representative to the State Superintendent's Parent Advisory Council. She was chairwoman for the successful 2000 permanent improvement levy campaign.
David Winebrenner, father of two Kings district children, has been an elementary school counselor in the Mount Healthy School District for seven years and has a master's degree in education administration.
Bonnie Baker-Hicks , a 1966 Kings High School graduate, was a Kings teacher for 30 years until she retired in 2000. Chris Saul, father of three Kings children, is head coach for Kings youth football and baseball, and head basketball coach for South Lebanon Youth basketball. The incumbents are Becky Holloway, Hale Husband and Del Landis.
In the last four years, the district has:
Built two new elementary schools.
Added an adult education program to the district.
Received numerous technology grants, including a $200,000 grant from Ohio SchoolNet.
Answering audience questions at an Oct. 29 forum, candidates said that they would be open to teachers' union concerns, and, with the exception of Mr. Landis, said that they would not oppose random drug testing of students if applied fairly.
Issues for the coming board include maintaining the schools' effectiveness rating, balancing the budget with or without the incremental operating levy on the Nov. 6 ballot, and updates to athletic facilities. Expansion of Kings High School may be a future concern.
