Stinnett doesn't feel snakebit by Diamondbacks

By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer

PHOENIX — Kelly Stinnett isn't bitter, and he isn't cursing his bad luck.

“It's pretty neat,” Stinnett said. “I'm happy for them. I'm still friends with a lot of guys.”

Stinnett, an original Arizona Diamondback, is now a catcher for the Reds. The Diamondbacks didn't offer him a contract after last season. Had Arizona offered him a contract, he'd be getting ready to play the New York Yankees in the World Series now.

“What's meant to be is meant to be,” Stinnett said. “It didn't work out. I don't kick myself or anything like that.

“The situation in Cincinnati has worked out well. They gave me the extension. I'm very happy.”

Stinnett hit .257 with nine home runs and 25 RBI for the Reds this year. His season ended in early September when he had surgery to repair his right elbow.

The Diamondbacks picked Stinnett in the third round of the expansion draft in 1997. He played three seasons with Arizona, splitting time at catcher.

So's it no surprise to him that the Diamondbacks are where they are.

“We came close in '99,” he said. “I thought they had a good shot. The difference between this year and last year is they had (Curt) Schilling for 15 more starts that helped them hold off the (San Francisco) Giants.”

Stinnett still lives in Mesa, Ariz. He was at Bank One Ballpark for a game in the division series against the St. Louis Cardinals and another in the championship series against the Atlanta Braves.

Stinnett had two wisdom teeth removed three days ago, along with surgery for a deviated septum. He plans on spending his recuperation watching the Series on television.

He'd like to see his former team win, but he wouldn't go so far as to say the Diamondbacks are the favorite.

“Any team that has Schilling and Randy (Johnson) has got a chance,” he said. “But look at what the Yankees have done the last few years.”
