Some Good News

Making a wish come true

map
A wish never grows too old.

Residents at Arden Courts of Anderson Township, 6870 Clough Pike, who are suffering memory impairment from Alzheimer's disease, are getting their wishes now through a group called Heart's Desire.

Today, the sign on Pete Orick's door will read “Gone Fishing.” Mr. Orick, 78, has always loved to fish. Heart's Desire will take him to Lake Isabella in Symmes Township as a part of celebrating the one-year anniversary of Arden Courts.

“If the weather permits, we will help him fulfill his wish,” said Brenda Gould, activities director.

Ms. Gould said they talk with the residents to learn their wishes.

“If we can't get enough information from them, we will talk with relatives to find out what they want,” Ms. Gould said.

On Thursday, Kate Wetzel, 90, will get her wish. She loves country western music, so at 2 p.m., local country artist Art Stone will give her a private performance and then perform for all the residents.

Harold Robbin, 84, had his wish fulfilled last week when he was treated to a steak dinner.

“We were not able to take him out to a steak dinner, so we brought the dinner to him,” said Carol McCormick, marketing director.

She said Morton's of Chicago downtown came and served a full course meal, including a filet mignon.

“They were the largest filet mignons I have ever seen,” Ms. McCormick said.

Dorothy Bissantz, 79, a Rosie Red, was given her wish. The Reds gave tickets to Mrs. Bissantz and her family to attend a game.

“This is something we want to continue,” Ms. McCormick said.

Efforts to help disaster relief continue to be widespread. Much of it is filled with acts of patriotism. Children continue to come up with ideas that catch on and result in contributions to the Red Cross, however large or small.

Recently Katie Sallada, 8, and her father, Stephen, were walking through Hyde Park Kroger. She saw a set of hair scrunchies on display.

“Hey, Dad, we made some of those for our soccer team,” she said. Mr. Sallada said the scrunchies became an idea for disaster relief.

“She made them, using patriotic colors,” Mr. Sallada said. “We sold them at schools, football games and a pumpkin festival at Minges Farm last weekend. She has collected $500 for disaster relief.”
